There is a stark, uncompromising thesis outlined in Jay Topp’s upcoming book, Art Is The Only Way Out: The artistic life is the only honest orientation that does not require us to lie to ourselves in a world that has lost its gods.

For centuries, human existence was organized around cosmic structures that told us exactly why our suffering mattered, what our lives were for, and where we were going. Now that those structures are gone, the modern human has turned to the spiritual self-help industry as a replacement. We scramble after substitutes—wellness optimizations, political movements, career achievements, or the fantasy of finding the perfect person or the perfect method, lineage, or teacher to “save” us.

But these substitutes fail structurally because they are built on a project of subtraction. They promise to reduce, manage, or eliminate the parts of life that are hard. Wellness promises a body where suffering is optimized away; therapy promises a self where all our traumas are processed; religion promises an afterlife where we are forgiven and redeemed.

True psychic development, or you could say the development of the self, requires an entirely different orientation. It is not a project of subtraction. It is an art form, and the making is the meaning.

Transfiguring the Raw Material

Clairvoyance does not operate by subtracting the tragic nature of reality. It does not offer a cosmic bypass to hide from the difficult elements of the human experience. Instead, it looks directly at the formless, chaotic raw material of your existence—the heavy ancestral pictures, the environmental static, the deep-seated grief of being alive—and it gives them form.

By utilizing energy tools to look at a painful mental image picture and hold it neutrally in a shape you can contemplate, see clearly, and find your space with—the unbearable becomes bearable. You stop fighting the current of existence. Like the ancient Greeks, you learn to look at a universe that does not rotate around your ego with your eyes wide open, transfiguring your suffering through the alchemy of form, understanding, and grace rather than attempting to just wipe it away.

This completely flips the script on how we approach meaning. The self-help industry treats meaning like a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered through the next productivity system, the next workshop, or an expensive altered state. Seeking always presupposes that meaning is already out there, complete without you. What if the very thing you were seeking already existed inside of you? What if all you need is a safe, structured, and guided space to look within?

In a tools-based energy practice, you realize that meaning is not found; it is generated. The deliberate, conscious act of sitting in your own energy, grounding your first chakra, and clearing foreign clutter out of your space is a fundamentally creative act. You are giving form to formless material. You are giving name to the nameless energies enmeshed inside of you. You are becoming conscious to the alchemy of experience in the world. Where there was an empty, reactive void, now there is a self-referencing presence. The making is the meaning.

Forging the Self from the Wound

To step into this level of mastery, we must shatter the core myth of modern essentialist spirituality: the idea that there is a pristine, perfect "true self" sitting under a rock waiting to be uncovered.

There is no default true self hiding under a rock. There is only the raw material you have been handed—a physical body, a distinct temperament, a messy personal history, and a porous unconscious filled with a bunch of unconscious programming. Before you can really read, heal, or guide anyone else, you must first learn to sit with yourself and discover who you really are. The self is not a hidden treasure to be found; it is something forged through sustained, conscious work over a lifetime.

"All persons are both artist and mystic because all are called to be in touch with the true self, the deep experience that is theirs, and to utter images from that silent space."

Matthew Fox

This is the path of true individuation. It requires an inverted will—taking the same intense drive that once tried to manipulate and control the outside events, and turning it entirely inward. It demands a necessary descent into the dark night of your own shadow and unexamined energy pictures to bring the unconscious figures running your life into the light.

The cover painting of Art Is The Only Way Out features a distinct red drip that represents the wound. In your energy system, the wound is not a structural defect you need to optimize away; the wound is the crack through which the channel opens and you expand capacity beyond what is inherent or given to you. It is the exact location where your forged self meets amor fati—the choice to not merely bear your life, but to love it completely.

🔮 Weekly Reading Exercise: The Alchemical Forge Audit

Pair up with a reading partner this week, or in your own Clairvoyant Meditation Practice use your tools of discerning and focus them on the difference between the True Self and a dominant sub-personality. You can also ask these questions in a reading with a psychic - book a session with me if you want to look at these things together!

  • The Subtraction Scan: Scan the lower chakras and look for where you are running an exhausting "seeking" loop. Notice if your energy system is trying to optimize, process, or wipe away an uncomfortable life circumstance rather than looking directly at it.

  • The Material Audit: Look directly at the 6th chakra (the center of the head). Identify the raw, unexamined material currently cluttering the space—the ancestral history, the collective panic, or the shadow parts. Notice how these unconscious figures are trying to run your life from underneath.

  • Locating the Crack: Trace your main energy channels and locate the signature of the primary wound or crack in your space. Differentiate between a repetitive trauma loop and the open alchemical channel through which your unique capacity arrives.

  • Healing Focus: Give a clean healing on the line of separation and the seat of awareness. Blow any pictures of needing an external savior, an altered state, or a perfect substitute to deliver meaning to your life. Restore your field to a self-referencing state of amor fati, allowing the forged self to emerge effortlessly.

🤳 One Small Step: The Transfiguration Frame

The next time you encounter a heavy, painful emotion or a chaotic life situation, stop trying to fix or process it away:

  • Isolate the Mass: Stop the physical or mental hustle for exactly two minutes and step back into the quiet room in the center of your head.

  • Give It Shape: Close your physical eyes and look directly at the discomfort. Instead of letting it remain a formless weight, give it a deliberate geometric shape, a clear boundary, and a specific color in your mind's eye.

  • Own the Material: Ground your first chakra firmly into the planet. Look at the object you've shaped and state silently to your space: "This is the material I have been given. I am under no obligation to erase it; I am here to give it form."

📓 Journaling Prompts for Deep Integration

  • The Substitute Audit: What external substitutes—achievement, wellness optimizations, a specific relationship, or a new spiritual teacher—are you currently using to try and perform a function that no external system can fulfill?

  • The Seeking Trap: How has the modern self-help industry kept you trapped in a perpetual loop of "seeking" meaning out there, rather than realizing that meaning is only generated in your own present-time act of making?

  • Embracing Amor Fati: Nietzsche’s formulation of amor fati demands that we do not merely bear or conceal the hard parts of our history, but actually love them. What raw, unexamined piece of your temperament or history are you ready to stop fighting so you can begin forging it into an authentic life? The hard truth of energetic mechanics is simple: you cannot alter, command, or manifest physical reality from a space outside of your physical vessel. Attempting to manifest your dream life while ungrounded is exactly like trying to drive a sedan while sitting strapped to the roof rack. You might see the road beautifully, but you cannot reach the pedals or turn the wheel. To take control of your life, you have to get back into the "Center of your Head" and grab the wheel.

From Insight to Integration

A blog post can spark a revelation, but a practice builds a life. Information without practical application is just “nice ideas” and doesn’t create meaningful growth and change.
