Most spiritual traditions describe growth as a linear ladder—a rigid climb from "un-enlightened" to "mastery." But when you study applied energetics, you quickly realize that consciousness does not move in a straight line. It moves in cycles, tides, and seasonal shifts.
In Creation Spirituality, theologian Matthew Fox dismantled the linear ladder by outlining The Four Paths: the Via Positiva (Awe), the Via Negativa (Emptying), the Via Creativa (Art/Co-Creation), and the Via Transformativa (Compassion/Justice).
Rather than abstract theological concepts, these four paths are literal descriptions of how energy moves through a calibrated human vehicle. When you understand the energy physics behind each path, you stop fighting your growth periods and start navigating them with seniority.
1. Via Positiva: Expanding the Container for Awe (7th Chakra)
The Via Positiva is the experience of wonder, joy, delight, and the sheer cosmic privilege of existing in a physical body.
Energetically, the Via Positiva requires an open 7th chakra (crown) and a resilient physical container that can withstand a high vibration. Many seekers assume that high-vibrational awe is easy to hold, but in practice, a constricted energy field will actually panic when hit with intense light or success. If your lower triad is clamped in survival fear, sudden joy or expansion feels overwhelming, causing you to self-sabotage or retreat into familiar anxiety.
To inhabit the Via Positiva, you must build somatic container strength, just like a weightlifter or a distance runner does. You must expand your aura's capacity to digest high-frequency cosmic energy without blowing your fuses or disconnecting from your body.
2. Via Negativa: The Dark Room of Subtraction (6th Chakra & Grounding)
The Via Negativa is the path of darkness, silence, grief, and letting go. It is the spiritual equivalent of winter—the necessary clearing of the field.
Modern culture detests the Via Negativa. We are conditioned to run away from discomfort, plastering toxic positivity over grief or using intellectual analysis to escape feeling “low”. But as Meister Eckhart observed, the soul grows by subtraction, not addition.
In consciousness mechanics, the Via Negativa happens when you step into the quiet, un-lit room in the center of your head (6th chakra) and beging to direct energy that is not yours with certainty and clarity. You stop trying to "fix" or "heal" the darkness. You sit in your own neutral silence, allowing old pictures, foreign expectations, and somatic tension or grief to drain directly into the earth. The Via Negativa is not a punishment; it is how your system creates open real estate for your next expansion. It is, as John Keats so aptly put it, “Negative Capability”, or the ability to sit in this kind of messy emptiness.
3. Via Creativa: Birthing Spirit into Matter (6th to 2nd/3rd Flow)
The Via Creativa is only possible to embody when the insights gained in the silence of the Via Negativa take form and shape in the physical world. It is the birth of new ideas, new practices, art, business, and fresh ways of living; usually more truthful and more expressive of the deep self.
Energetically, the Via Creativa is a clean downward flow of one’s own energy from the crown (7th chakra) and center of your head (6th chakra) through your throat (5th chakra) and into your other energy centers. Most people live in a pattern of energy moving up from the emotions (2nd chakra) or will (3rd chakra) to be their animating flow.
The primary trap here is seeking external permission or approval. When a practitioner tries to create something new while caring about public judgment, the flow gets blocked in the solar plexus. True co-creation requires stepping out of performative expert mode and birthing your vision with complete spiritual autonomy—without asking the crowd for a license to exist.
4. Via Transformativa: Seniority Without the Savior Complex (1st–3rd Boundary Work)
The Via Transformativa is where personal realization translates into real-world action, boundary work, justice, and service to others. It is where you bring your clean space out into the context of the world you live in.
In energy work, the danger of the Via Transformativa is falling into the Savior Complex. When you try to transform the world or help clients by activating your 3rd chakra, bleeding your own energy across the room as direct influence on others, or absorbing other people's suffering to prove how well you can perform healing, you burn out.
True transformation requires neutral seniority. You hold a clean, grounded space and act as a clear mirror—offering high-fidelity truth without digesting the other person or the world's baggage for them. You stop trying to "save" anyone and instead hold an un-shakable container where real self-directed transformation becomes possible.
🔮 Weekly Reading Exercise: The Four Paths Audit
Pair up with a reading partner this week, or in your own Clairvoyant Meditation Practice use your tools of discernment and focus them on the difference between the True Self and a dominant sub-personality. You can also ask these questions in a reading with a psychic—book a session with me if you want to look at these things together!
Scanning the Active Path: Scan the readee's overall energy field. Which of the Four Paths (Positiva, Negativa, Creativa, or Transformativa) are they currently navigating, and where are they resisting the natural flow?
Checking Via Negativa Resistance: Look at the 6th chakra (center of the head) and 1st chakra grounding. Is the readee fighting a necessary clearing period by trying to over-think, over-work, or force a false resolution?
Checking Via Creativa Flow: Look at the line from the 6th chakra down to the 2nd chakra. Are there pictures of "fear of judgment" or "seeking permission" blocking their creative output?
Healing Focus: Give a clean healing to the spine and all seven chakras. Clear out the struggle against their current spiritual season. Run a brilliant stream of Gold Sun energy calibrated to the exact path they are in, allowing them to occupy their current season with complete ease.
🤳 One Small Step: Season Calibration
The next time you feel stuck, restless, or exhausted by your practice or life:
Hit the Pause Button: Step squarely into the center of your head and drop a heavy 1st-chakra grounding cord to the center of the earth.
Identify Your Path: Close your eyes and ask your spirit neutrally: "Which path am I actually in right now?"
Do I need to celebrate and receive (Positiva)?
Do I need to empty, rest, and subtract (Negativa)?
Do I need to birth something new without permission (Creativa)?
Do I need to set clean boundaries and step into real-world action (Transformativa)?
Surrender to the Physics: Stop demanding that a Via Negativa season feel like a Via Creativa season. Give your body and spirit permission to fully occupy the exact phase you are in today.
📓 Journaling Prompts for Deep Integration
Honoring the Via Negativa: What are you currently trying to "fix" or "work through" that actually just needs to be grieved, subtracted, and grounded out of your space?
Un-blocking Creation: What creative idea or project have you been holding back because you are secretly waiting for an external authority figure or audience to validate it?
Eradicating the Savior: Where in your service, relationships, or work are you using 3rd-chakra strain and emotional absorption instead of clean, grounded boundary seniority?
